What once smoldered beneath the earth now drinks the rain.
Cairngorms, Scotland · 2043 (17 years ahead) · peatland restoration · watercolor, soft mist, moss green and peat brown
Why this card
After the July wildfire, drones began finding hot spots still smoldering beneath the Cairngorms' peat, showing both how peat fires hide and how they can now be caught early. I set the card in 2043 because rewetting a damaged blanket bog, and letting it store carbon safely again, takes a couple of decades. The picture shows that outcome: a healthy, waterlogged bog where the moss drinks the rain instead of burning from below.
