The old gold shaft now goes down to look up.

Why this card
The Guardian reports that a century-old gold mine in Lead, South Dakota is being turned, a mile underground, into giant detectors for neutrino physics. I imagine the lab maturing and opening its shafts to the public, so the mining town's new trade becomes guiding visitors and school classes down into the dark to watch for the universe's faintest signals. The cutaway traces that new ritual, from Main Street to a detector hall, with 2043 giving the experiment time to run and the town time to reinvent itself around it.
