A Philippine island market · 2036 (10 years ahead) · banana breeding · gouache market-stall still life, sunlit green and speckled yellow
Why this card
The Guardian reports a breakthrough in breeding techniques that could give the disease- and climate-threatened Cavendish banana a secure future after decades of monoculture vulnerability. Ten years is about right for new resistant varieties to reach orchards and market stalls. The picture shows the hoped-for outcome not as one saved banana but as a diverse, resilient spread of varieties at a market, making variety itself the good news.
