Why this card
Mongabay India reports that diets are narrowing worldwide while Indigenous Indian crops such as the clove bean and the Yerengere white long brinjal are being overlooked. I imagine that over about twelve years, seed-saving farmers, school meal programmes and ordinary markets bring such varieties back into everyday cooking, which is the kind of slow change a dozen years allows. The picture shows the outcome rather than the report: a rainy-day market heaped with unfamiliar vegetables, where a farmer hands a schoolchild a pale white brinjal to try.
