Why this card
Scientists have rediscovered how the Romans made the colour-changing glass of the 1,600-year-old Lycurgus Cup, which looks green in reflected light and red when light shines through it. Eight years is enough time for a lab method to pass to working glassmakers and become ordinary studio stock. The picture shows the outcome: a workshop bench where identical new cups glow ruby against the window and stay jade green away from it.
