The dunes stay put. Ask the mushrooms why.
Anglesey dunes, Wales · 2041 (15 years ahead) · dune ecology · hand-coloured natural history cutaway plate
Why this card
A Guardian country diary from Aberffraw on Anglesey notes that the fungi growing in the sand are vital to keeping the dunes in place. I chose 2041 because using soil fungi to restore dunes is ecological work that takes about fifteen years to show results along a whole coastline. The cutaway shows that outcome: replanted grass held firm by a thick web of fungal threads under the surface, with the mushrooms on top as the only sign of it.
